David Beckham has been announced as the first global ambassador for Chinese football and is to visit the country this year to help promote Chinese football domestically and globally.

Beckham, the first international sportsman to receive such an invitation from the Chinese Football Association, said 'I am honoured to have been asked to play such an important role at this special time in Chinese football history'.
